SUBSTITUTIONS

For a part sun situation, replace this recipe’s sun-loving flowers (gerbera daisies, dahlias, and lantanas) with shade-tolerant tropical foliage plants such as Artful Heartfire angel wings, Royal Hawaiian Hawaiian Punch elephant’s ear, and Infinity Red New Guinea impatiens.

Colocasia esculenta ROYAL HAWAIIAN® Hawaiian Punch

Caladium hortulanum ARTFUL® HEARTFIRE®

Impatiens hawkeri INFINITY® Red

DIRECTIONS

1. Begin by arranging the taller plants—papyruses, canna lilies, and rose mallow—at the back of the planting area. Space papyrus plants 3–4 feet apart, cannas 1.5–2 feet apart, and rose mallow 4–5 feet apart.

2. Group the lantanas in front and to the side of the papyrus plants and cannas, allowing each plant a space of 18–24 inches across.

3. Arrange the dahlias and gerbera daisies in front, spacing dahlias 12–16 inches apart and gerbera daisies 10–12 inches apart.

4. Edge with sweet potato vines, allowing each plant a space 10–12 inches across.
